Celebrate the clean, swimmable waters of Salem Sound on Massachusetts' North Shore at the 10th Annual
Swim & Fin Race for Salem Sound! This is a charity swim--all proceeds benefit Salem Sound Coastwatch, a nonprofit environmental organization working to keep our coastal waters clean and safe and to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards. This is a festive event at a beautiful park in Salem Harbor. Families are welcome--there will be music, great food, exciting raffles, a marine touch tank and more! Races are for all ages and levels. Swimmers will be treated Finz' Restaurant famous clam chowder.

Races
There are three races: 500 meters, 1 mile and 5K.

Date, Time & Place
Races will be held Saturday, August 29, 2014 at Forest River Park, 98 West Ave., Salem, MA 01970. 
Races start at 10 am. There is no rain date.

Sanctioning and Insurance
The event will be dual sanctioned by US Masters (USMS) and USA Swimming (USAS).

For insurance purposes, swimmers must be a member of one of these organizations. One-event memberships can be purchased during the registration process.

  • Swimmers 18 and over needing a one-event membership should register under the category marked "USMS One Event Registration."  The fee for USMS one-event membership is $13.
  • For swimmers 17 and under needing a one-event membership, please contact Salem Sound Coastwatch to register (info@salemsound.org - 978-741-7900). The fee for USAS one-event membership is $15.

Entry Fees and Pre-registration
Adults 
Early bird registration is $35 through Aug. 1, Aug 2-27 is $40; $45 Race Day
Youth, 17 & under – Early bird is $25 through Aug 1, Aug 2-27 is $30; $35 Race Day

Swimmers must register by Friday, August 14 to get an event tee shirt!

Pre-registration closes Thursday, August 27, 11:59 , EDT. The race field is capped at 250 swimmers. Race day registration will only be available if the race has not reached capacity.

Race Day Registration and Check in

Registration and check in will be open from 8 am until 9:30 am.
Swimmers must have completed check-in and body marking prior to the mandatory 9:45 AM safety meeting.

Tee Shirts  

Register by Friday, August 14 to get a free tee shirt. If there are any extras, they will be sold at the event—no guarantees though!

Course Descriptions

  • The 5k race consists of 3 laps around a rectangular course with an in-water start.
  • The 1 mi race consists of 1 lap around a rectangular course with an in-water start.
  • The 500 meter race is a triangular course with a beach start.

All races finish on the beach.

End of Race and Clearing the Course

If a swimmer has no reasonable chance of finishing the course in 2 hours (in the opinion of the Head Referee on the course), the swimmer may be picked up before 2 hours. We will start picking up the slowest swimmers before the 2 hour mark, work our way around the course and pick up the last swimmer at the 2 hour mark.  Swimmers who refuse pick-up may be barred from participation in the future.

Warm-up

Swimmers will be able to warm up using the 500 meter course from 8:30 – 9:30 am. The course will be monitored and patrolled.

Wetsuits  

US Masters: Wetsuits are allowed and will be judged in a separate class.
USA Swimming: Wetsuits are NOT allowed. This also applies to one-event members. USAS swimmers wearing wetsuits or non-compliant suits will be disqualified.

Awards

  • 500 meter race (get wet fun race – not sanctioned)
    1st, 2nd, & 3rd place by gender: 10 & under, 11-14, 15-18
    1st place only by gender 10 year increments: 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, up to 70+

  • 1 mile and 5K
    US Masters: 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place by gender and wetsuit. Age groups are in 5 year increments:
    19-24, 25-29, 30-34, up to 70+
    USA Swimming: 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place by gender. Age groups are 12 & under, 13-14, 15-18, and open

Timing
Electronic chip timing will be provided by Granite State Race Services.

Safety
Brightly colored swim caps will be PROVIDED AND REQUIRED. Numbers will be written on the caps, swimmer's arms and on hands for those wearing wetsuits. Safety kayaks and rescue boats will be on the course for emergencies.

All swimmers must immediately follow any instructions given to them by race officials, safety officials, or the harbormaster. 

Any swimmer who exits the course anywhere other than the finish line MUST IMMEDIATELY notify an administrative referee.

Race Abandonment
In the event of a safety hazard such as dangerous weather or marine life intrusion, the race may be abandoned.   The notification of abandonment to swimmers will be multiple, long air horn blasts.  Upon hearing these blasts swimmers should go to the nearest safety personnel for directions on clearing the course.   

If You or Another Athlete Are In Distress
If you are in distress or you see someone else in distress-- stop, wave your hands and get the attention of a kayaker or paddleboarder.  Also, be aware safety personnel may approach you and ask if you are OK.  Don't be alarmed, this is for your safety.

Water Temps
Mean water temperature at this time of year is 68 degrees.

Free Parking and Free Admission to Park
The City of Salem has waived admission fees to the park for this event. In the event it’s needed, we have arranged for overflow parking at a specifc lot .7 miles from the park on the Salem State University Campus.

Bring the Family!
This is a festive event, with music, raffles, a marine touch tank and more. Families can picnic and enjoy the wooded Forest River Park. The park has 2 beaches, walking paths, playground, and restrooms.

Cancellation
There is no rain date. The swim will be cancelled only if necessary for the safety of the swimmers. In case of cancellation, your registration fee will become a tax deductible donation to Salem Sound Coastwatch.
